Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi last Wednesday to pay 4 lakh rupees each to the next of kin of those who died due to Covid-19. In fact, he says, "50,000 rupees compensation is not enough. CM Channi has written to the Prime Minister and in his letter said, "His government is ready to contribute 25 per cent of the compensation amount.'
Wrote letter to PM @narendramodi ji & urged him to implement his previous order of disbursing ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the kin of those who died due to Covid19. I feel, mere Rs 50, 000 compensation is insufficient. My Govt. is ready to contribute our 25% share under this scheme. pic.twitter.com/3NaErNGARW

CM Channi tweeted about it last Wednesday night. He wrote in a letter written by him, "As a welfare state, it is our responsibility to help the distressed citizens. Under the State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF), 75 per cent of the amount of Rs four lakh that is Rs three lakh is to be paid by the central government while the remaining 25 per cent is to be paid by the state government. The Punjab government is ready to bear its share.''
The letter says, "The Covid epidemic has severely affected most of the country's population. People died prematurely, businesses were closed, people were forced to flee. Families lost their earning members and expensive treatment in private hospitals left them on the streets. 50,000 is not enough for them in such difficult times. He further said, "We demand that the Central Government implement its earlier order issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on 14th March 2020, in which the Centre had committed an ex-gratia of Rs.4 lakh The Central Government amended the notification and reduced the ex-gratia amount to Rs. 50,000. ”
Earlier, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi had also said last Wednesday that "the government should give accurate figures of those who lost their lives due to corona and pay compensation of 4 lakh rupees to every affected family. His party will put pressure on the government to get compensation of Rs 4 lakh to the affected families.''
