Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday accused previous governments of putting the state into debt, promising that the AAP government would investigate and retrieve the funds.

"Previous governments have left Punjab with a debt of Rs 3 lakh crore. However, where has this been applied? We will investigate and reclaim because it is people's money," the party's state unit stated in a Punjabi tweet, referencing the chief minister.

AAP leaders have criticised successive governments in the state for allegedly dragging the state into a debt trap in the run-up to the Punjab Assembly elections in February.

Raghav Chadha, a prominent AAP leader, had accused the previous Akali-BJP and then-Congress governments in Punjab of dragging the state into debt ahead of the elections.

Chadha said at the time that every child born in Punjab had a debt of Rs one lakh.

"In the last 50 years, the Congress and Badal government have rendered Punjab a Rs 3 lakh crore debtor. With a population of three crores, every person in Punjab now owes Rs 1 lakh in debt "Chadha has stated previously. By winning 92 of the 117 Assembly seats in Punjab, the AAP wrested power from the Congress.
