Chandigarh: Punjab's Captain Amarinder Singh government has given a big relief to power consumers. The government has given relief to all farmers, domestic and commercial power consumers. The government has ordered a reduction of service connection charges by about 50 percent to increase the load. Necessary instructions have been issued to Punjab State Electricity Corporation (PSPCL) to this effect. This will provide a huge relief of Rs 150 crore to the farmers of the state and Rs 50 crore to the domestic and commercial consumers.

On Tuesday, a CM office spokesperson said that a petition had been filed by Powercom before the Punjab State Electricity Regulatory Commission (PSERC). It has now decided to launch a Voluntary Interview Scheme (VDS) to increase the load for tubewell motors, homes and commercial establishments by farmers, domestic and commercial users from October 27 to 31, 2019. CM has specifically directed Powercom to set up an effective power infrastructure including transformers and power lines on a priority basis where farmers and consumers are coming forward to increase the load.

According to the VDS, farmers will now have to deposit Rs 2500 per BHP to increase the load. Earlier, they had to deposit Rs.4750 per BHP. Now, to increase a load of tubewell motor to 5bhp, farmers will have to pay less than Rs. Domestic consumers will now have to pay SS rates of rs.885 only from Rs.225. Service connection charges were currently being charged from Rs 1,000 to Rs 1600 as per the load. Similarly, commercial users will now have to pay only Rs 500 to Rs 800 for service connection charges as per the load. In Punjab, farmers' electricity bills are often a political issue.
