Banwarilal Purohit, the Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh, has submitted his resignation. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, he cited personal reasons and other commitments for his decision. "Due to my personal reasons and certain other commitments, I tender my resignation from the post of Governor of Punjab and Administrator, Union Territory, Chandigarh. Please accept the same and oblige," Mr. Purohit stated in his resignation letter. His resignation follows a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi, just a day prior.

The timing of his resignation coincides with the aftermath of the BJP's victory in the Chandigarh mayoral polls, where they retained all three posts, despite allegations from the Congress-Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alliance of ballot tampering by the presiding officer.

Recently, the AAP approached the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking fresh polls under the supervision of a retired judge, but their plea was denied interim relief by a division bench on Wednesday. Subsequently, the Supreme Court has agreed to consider an urgent hearing for an AAP councillor's plea challenging the high court's decision.

Purohit has been involved in disputes with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on various issues in the past, adding a layer of complexity to his resignation.
