State Government announces four per cent reservation for disabled in government jobs and promotions in the state. The Amarinder government of Punjab has issued a notification on Tuesday to implement the Centre's order on 13th September 2107. So far, there was a provision for three per cent reservation in Punjab. The four per cent reservation will be provided under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 on behalf of the Department of Disability, Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment.

As per the notification issued, 4 per cent reservation will be given in promotion and direct recruitment in Group A, B, C and D of Government jobs. 1 per cent for the blind, 1 per cent for deaf persons, 1 per cent for locomotor disability including cerebral palsy, leprosy, dwarfism, acid attack sufferers and muscular dystrophy and those under Group A to D with different disabilities. The system of 1 per cent reservation for the sufferers has been implemented with immediate effect.

The PWD Act, 1995, on behalf of the Government of Punjab, came into force on 7th February, 1996. Three categories of disabled persons were created, with a provision of 1 per cent for the physically handicapped, 1 per cent for the blind and 1 per cent for the deaf and dumb. Now, as per the new central government law, another category has been included in the disabled category and 1 per cent reservation in jobs. So, promotion and reservation in jobs for the disabled has gone up to 4 per cent. This move of the Punjab Government is absolutely welcome.
