Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi on Friday ordered the establishment of a memorial to the farmers who perished during the year-long protests against the controversial farm rules.

After consulting the farmers' unions, Channi stated his administration will choose the site. "The Centre's decision to repeal the farm laws is a democratic achievement. The names of all individuals who died during the protest will be listed on the memorial. It will be a fitting memorial to the long-term movement that shook the heart of the city. "The victory is the result of the farmers' hard and zealous effort, and it will be written in the chronicles of history," he said.  According to sources, even though the Punjab government's move was perceived as an attempt to claim credit for the farmers' success, the Congress had backed the farmers throughout their agitation.

Channi asked a compensation package from the Union Government for the deaths and property losses caused by over 700 farming families. He also urged that a measure guaranteeing farmers a minimum support price be introduced in Parliament during the upcoming winter session. "The state has already given the relatives of the deceased farmers government jobs and Rs 5 lakh apiece," he said.
