Punjabi novelist Jaswant Singh Kanwal dies at 101

Chandigarh: Renowned Punjabi writer and Sahitya Academy Award recipient Jaswant Singh Kanwal passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2020, in his native village Dhudike in Moga. At the same time, his grandson Sumail Singh Sidhu told that Jaswant Singh Kanwal was going sick for the last few days.

He was 101 years old and died on Saturday after a brief illness. He was cremated in Dhudike. When he was a teenager, he gave up studies and went to Malaysia. After some years he returned to his village.

For your information, let us tell you that in the year 1996, Sahitya Akademi gave him a fellowship on his book 'Pakhi', and two years later in 1998, he was given Sahitya Akademi Award on the novel Taushali di Hanso. Awarded Sahitya Shiromani Award by Punjab Government in 2007. Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, while condoling the death of Kanwal, described him as a talented writer. He said that Kanwal will always be remembered for the work done in Punjabi language, art and literature.
