After a number of European nations closed their airspace to all Russian planes as a result of Moscow's armed war with Kiev, the Russian government said that it is working on a plan to evacuate its nationals from Europe.
On Sunday, Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency and Federal Tourism Agency said that they were collaborating with the Russian Foreign Ministry to remove Russians from European countries that are continuing to impose sanctions on Russia, including suspending Russian planes from their airspace.
"The Federal Air Transport Agency, in collaboration with the Russian Foreign Ministry and the Federal Tourism Agency, is organising the evacuation of Russian people from European nations. A schedule will be created when the requisite carrying capacities have been clarified "According to the statement.
"Russian airlines are ready to fulfil their commitments to passengers and return them home," the statement said, "subject to flexible approaches and constructive choices by European aviation authorities on this issue." Russians in Europe should download the Russian Foreign Ministry's Foreign Assistant smartphone app, according to the agencies.
Russians in Europe may be evacuated home through Turkey, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Egypt, among other nations still available to Russian planes, according to Dmitry Gorin, vice president of the Russian Union of Travel Industry (PCT), who spoke to RIA Novosti on Sunday. Tour operators are trying to transport "400 independent and organised visitors from Budapest, Hungary, 500 organised tourists from Bulgaria, and about 200 from Portuguese Madeira" back to Russia, he said.
