Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot on Saturday admired the medium of radio in reaching out to masses, especially those residing in remote areas.
Speaking on World Radio Day, Gehlot noted that he himself listens to radio and feels that the medium plays an important role despite the presence of various other state-of-the-art communication platforms.
“Radio is also an important means of spreading awareness in society,” he said. “Radio has a worldwide reach and this powerful and very cheap medium of communication is suitable for residents of rural and remote areas, which provides them a platform for public discussion,” the chief minister added.
Gehlot said the medium also helped in making people aware, providing necessary information and alerting them against rumours during the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
Significance of Radio, a reflection: It is pertinent to note that radio was initially considered a kind of disembodied newspaper. Although this idea gave early proponents a useful, familiar way to think about radio, it underestimated radio’s power as a medium. Newspapers had the potential to reach a wide audience, but radio had the potential to reach almost everyone. Neither illiteracy nor even a busy schedule impeded radio’s success- one could now perform an activity and listen to the radio at the same time. This unprecedented reach made radio an instrument of social cohesion as it brought together members of different classes and backgrounds to experience the world as a nation.
