Rahul Gandhi slams Centre over WHO Covid death numbers

NEW DELHI: A day after the WHO provided data on Covid deaths, which was 10 times more than the Centre claimed, the political blame game began. The Modi government has disputed the WHO's claims, objecting to the WHO's approach and methodology.

"47 lakh Indians died due to the Covid pandemic," Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tweeted on Friday.  Not4.8 lakh as said by the Govt. Science doesn't lie. Modi does.  Families who have lost loved ones should be respected. Support them with the Rs 4 lakh compensation that is required." By the end of 2021, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that the Covid-19 epidemic had caused about 15 million deaths worldwide, either directly or indirectly.

According to the WHO, the majority of the excess deaths (84%) occurred in Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Americas, with 68 percent occurring in only ten nations worldwide. Middle-income nations accounted for 81% of the 14.9 million additional fatalities, while high-income and low-income countries each contributed for 15% and 4%. The global death toll was higher for men (57%) for women (43%), and it was also higher among the elderly.

The WHO's methodology for projecting excess mortality figures based on mathematical models has been criticised by India, according to the Union Health Ministry.

"Despite India's objections to the modelling exercise's procedure, methodology, and outcome, the WHO has released excess mortality numbers without appropriately addressing India's concerns."  "India had also told the WHO that mathematical models should not be utilised for predicting excess mortality statistics for India due to the availability of legitimate data published through the Civil Registration System (CRS) by the Registrar General of India (RGI)," it said.
