New Delhi: The central government has set a target of electrify 100 per cent of the railways in the next ten years. Railway Minister Piyush Goyal shared this information on Wednesday. The government is taking this step with a view to reducing carbon emissions. The Railway Minister said, the mission to run the Railways with renewable energy in the coming ten years has been put in place.

"We have decided to electrify 100 per cent of the railways. With a track of about 1,20,000 km, we will be the first largest railway in the world to be fully electrified. You can imagine how much carbon emissions will come down from the entire atmosphere. According to the Railway Minister, more than half of the trains coming to New Delhi are running on diesel but the ministry is working on their electrification.

"In the next one year, the trains coming to New Delhi will be electrified," Goyal said. They are ensuring that they all go by electricity. The Railway Ministry is taking a number of steps to reduce carbon emissions and protect the environment. In FY 2018-19, Indian Railways consumed 20.44 billion units of electricity and 3.1 billion litres of high-speed diesel for its energy needs. "I have a mission to emit zero carbon by the Indian Railways in the next 10 years.
