Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains continue to hammer areas of Kerala, with the districts of Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Kottayam suffering the worst damage. According to reports, three persons died on Monday as a result of rain-related events.

In Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow alert for Tuesday. In the districts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Kollam, and Alappuzha, all schools and educational institutions would be closed today.

Due to the constant rain, many universities in the state have postponed exams scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, while collectors in seven south central districts have proclaimed Monday a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges.

One house was entirely wrecked and 28 were partially damaged in rain-related accidents across the state, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), which added that three lives, including two toddlers, were lost in the last 24 hours. Two toddlers died on Sunday in separate instances in the Kannur and Thrissur districts. In the Ernakulam district, a mudslide resulted in the death of a driver.

Kerala had 833.8 mm of rain from October 1 to 15, according to IMD, whereas the usual average rainfall is 407.2 mm. There is a 105 percent deviation. During this time, Pathanamthitta district had 194 percent more rain, with Kannur, Kasaragod, and Kozhikode districts receiving 127, 116, and 111 percent more rain.
