Thiruvananthapuram: Due to heavy rainfall, the district collectors of Kerala's Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, and Kasargod districts have declared a holiday for schools and colleges on Monday. Heavy rains have disrupted life in several regions of Kerala, including the state capital Thiruvananthapuram, as well as the districts of Kollam, Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Kasargod.
The taluks of Nedumangad and Kattakada in Thiruvananthapuram have also declared Monday a holiday for schools and colleges. In a related incident, university examinations have been cancelled in all of the southern districts due to heavy rainfall. After one shutter of the Cheruthoni dam in Idukki was opened on Sunday, police have prohibited anyone from travelling to the district at night. After the shutters of Idukki dam were opened and Tamil Nadu officials informed the Idukki district government about the prospect of opening the shutters of Mullaperiyar dam, a red warning was issued for individuals living along the Periyar river's banks.
Following continuous rains, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has issued a warning to the public to be on high alert for the next three days. The state administration had previously stated that district collectors would decide whether or not to declare a holiday for schools and institutions in their jurisdictions.
Devotees will have limited access to the Sabarimala shrine, which opens for the annual pilgrimage season on Monday. The Pampa River is overflowing, and the government has issued a high-level warning for Pathanamthitta.
