On Wednesday Central government received latter from Tamil Nadu government informing them about its decision to release the seven convicted for the assassination of Indian Prime Minister Rajeev Gandhi.

Former prime minister was killed while campaigning in Tamil Nadu by a suicide bomber from the separatist rebel group LTTE.

In the letter Union Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary K Gnanadesikan said, “ the state government had received petitions from the seven convicts  requesting to release them as they had spent more than 20 years in prison.”  This Convicts are V Sriharan, T Suthendraraja, AG Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran and Nalini.

He said, “ Malimi has also filed a writ plea in the Madras High Court requesting the government of Tamil Nadu to release her,” adding in this he said, “ The Government of Tamil Nadu, after takeing into consideration the petitions of the seven convicts, has decided to remit the sentences of life imprisonment and to release the seven persons since all of them have already served imprisonment for 24 years.”

 Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi said, “ Government has to decide on issue of renitting sentences of Rajeev Gandhi killers, as a son I would not express my personal views.”
