NEW DELHI: As a gesture of respect for Lata Mangeshkar, the Rajya Sabha's sessions were adjourned for an hour on Monday.

Chairman Venkaiah Naidu expressed sorrow over Lata Mangeshkar's death shortly after the House convened at 10 a.m. He described her vocal abilities as "as diverse as our country."

"Lata ji united our nation by symbolising each of us individually and collectively." She caught every mood, moment, and journey of our nation for over seven decades, not only by setting the gold standard for playback singing with thousands of melodic songs in a different language, but also by defining the golden standard for playback singing.

"Over the last 75 years, her outstanding and long career ran parallel to that of free India, reflecting the struggles and sufferings of the times. With her death in the 75th year of independence, India has fallen silent," the RS Chairman added.

He also stated that she was a great philanthropist who formed the Lata Mangeshkar Medical Foundation, a public benevolent trust that assists poor patients regardless of caste, creed, or religion with medical expenses. He stated that she also founded Master Deenanath Mangeshkar Smruti Pratishthan, which helps students and contributes to the care of senior citizens.
