NEW DELHI: The Rajya Sabha faced disruptions on Monday as Opposition parties created a ruckus over the ethnic violence in Manipur. They demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and suspension of regular business to hold a detailed discussion on the matter. The House was adjourned till 12 noon in response to the uproar.
As soon as the House assembled for the day and papers were laid on the table, the Opposition raised the issue, urging the chair to consider their notices on the suspension of business in the Upper House for a thorough discussion on the matter. Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar revealed that he had received 27 notices under Rule 267.
The situation led to back-to-back adjournments of the House during the Monsoon Session of Parliament on both Thursday and Friday, with no substantial business being conducted due to the Opposition's rejection of the government's proposal for a short-duration discussion.
Even the Lok Sabha faced adjournment on the same issue on Thursday and Friday, further adding to the disruption. The demand for a discussion on Manipur and a statement from the Prime Minister was echoed by various Opposition MPs.
Aam Aadmi Party MP Raghav Chadha emphasized that it is the responsibility of the Central government to maintain peace in the country and called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the Manipur violence in Parliament.
Joining the protest along with other opposition MPs, Nationalist Congress Party MP Supriya Sule emphasized that the issue was about women and not a competition between States. She condemned such incidents occurring in any state.
Trinamool Congress MP Abhishek Banerjee criticized the "double engine government" as incompetent, stating that the visuals of the incident were deeply disturbing. He accused the government of diverting attention from the matter.
In conclusion, the Rajya Sabha faced significant disruptions as the Opposition demanded immediate action and discussion on the Manipur issue. The government's attempts to conduct regular business were thwarted as the demand for a thorough examination of the matter took precedence.
