LUCKNOW:  A first-year student at a local private university consumed poison after getting rape and murder threats from six of her classmates, three of whom were female.

The incident was made public on Monday when a video of the girl recounting her horror while lying in bed in the hospital went viral on social media.

DCP East Zone Prachi Singh said, an FIR has been filed against the six students on counts of rioting, willingly causing harm, malicious insult, and criminal intimidation based on the complaint made by the girl's brother, and an investigation is now ongoing.

The girl, who is from Mau, is a B.Com III student and lives in the university's residence hall, according to the FIR. She was allegedly beaten by her roommate, a B.Tech III student, on September 5 during an argument involving a phone conversation. She also smashed her phone.

The girl subsequently complained in writing to the hostel's chief warden, and as a result, she was given a private room.

This incensed the accused student, who on September 8 confronted the victim in the campus canteen with the help of five friends -- two females and three boys, and humiliated her by threatening to kill her and rape her. In the FIR, the brother said that on September 9, after being humiliated, his sister fell into a state of depression and ingested poison.

The dormitory warden called her relatives and hurried the girl to a local private hospital on Ayodhya Road.  The following day, her brother arrived in the city. After hospital treatment, the girl has been discharged.
