Rayagada: 4 died and 12 affected from 'Anthrax'

Koraput:At Rayadad district’s village Jamuguda,four people have died after suffering from anthrax and atleast 12 people affected. Although the first death was reported on March 24 when one Dasu Majhi, 55, of the village succumbed. Lachha Majhi, 40, died on April 1. Two other villagers, Salali Majhi, 52, and Loi Majhi, 61, died on March 27.

On Sunday April 3rd , a team of doctors from Kashipur hospital visited the village and admitted three affected villagers in Rayagada hospital for further treatment.

Santi Bhusan Pathi (Medical officer (Kashipur)said, "It could be anthrax as the villagers have developed symptoms of the disease. Blood samples of affected persons have been collected for laboratory test." Official sources said the villagers had consumed beef of a dead cow on March 22.

Jagannath Mohanty said, "Our medical teams will be regularly visiting the village for the next few days to find out new cases. At present, the situation is under control and the villagers are also being made aware of not to consume rotten beef,"
