Bhubaneswar: A team of research groups that lists archaeological monuments said they have discovered the remains of an ancient temple in Puri city of Odisha, possibly from the 13th-14th century. Four members of the Rediscover Lost Heritage team unearthed the ruins near the mouth of Bhargavi river in the Balanga area, 31 kilometers from Puri city. The team is currently working to list archaeological monuments in the Ratnachira valley.

Deepak Naik, a coordinator of the same research project, said that the remains of the ancient temple have been found scattered along the river. Naik said in a release that given the temple's objects, it seems to date back to the 13th-14th century or even earlier. Many parts of the temple were picked up for rural construction. There are about two dozen ancient carved stretches up to the jaws of the river.

Anil Dhir, who is leading the same team, said the Ratnachira Valley is full of archaeological surprises and most of them are unknown as the recording has not taken place. According to mythology, Lord Ram had changed the direction of the river's flow from goddess Sita's pearl ring to quench her thirst. This ancient river remains dry most of the year. Dhir has urged the State Archaeology Department to conduct a proper survey of the entire 60 km of the Ratnachira Valley and record the monuments.
