Iconic classical singer, Dr. Prabha Atre, a leading figure in the Kirana Gharana, breathed her last at 92 due to a sudden cardiac arrest at her home. The news of her passing saddened many as she was not only a distinguished vocalist but also a recipient of the prestigious Padma Vibhushan. Atre's contribution to Hindustani classical music was immense, making her a torchbearer of the Kirana Gharana.

The veteran singer suffered a cardiac arrest while asleep at her residence, and despite being rushed to Dinanath Mangeshkar Hospital, she was pronounced dead at 5:30 am. Her funeral arrangements are on hold until some close family members, residing abroad, can be present. Tragically, Atre's demise came just before she was set to perform at the "Swarprabha" program in Mumbai.

Born on September 13, 1932, Prabha Atre was more than just a vocalist; she was a versatile personality, excelling as an academician, researcher, composer, and author. Holding degrees in science and law, she earned a doctorate in music, showcasing her diverse talents. Recognizing her exceptional contributions, the Indian government bestowed upon her all three Padma awards. She received the Padma Vibhushan in January 2022, following earlier accolades with the Padma Shri in 1990 and the Padma Bhushan in 2002.

Known for her mastery in various musical genres such as khyaal, tarana, thumri, dadra, ghazal, and bhajan, Prabha Atre's legacy extends far beyond her time. Her passing marks another loss for Indian classical music, coming just days after the demise of Ustad Rashid Khan, who succumbed to cancer in Kolkata. The back-to-back losses have left the music community mourning the departure of two legends within a week.
