Srinagar: Restrictions continue for the second day in the Kashmir Valley on Friday as a precautionary measure following the death of hardcore separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Officials said there is a ban on the movement and gathering of people in Kashmir. In view of Friday prayers, restrictions have been tightened in the old part of the city and some new areas. He said roads leading to Geelani's house in the Haiderpura area are closed and barricades have also been erected in other areas to prevent the movement of people.

Officials said a large number of security forces have been deployed to maintain the law and order situation. All mobile phone services except BSNL's postpaid service are closed to prevent any rumors from spreading, while mobile internet services are also closed. He said the situation will be reviewed after the prayers and a decision will be taken whether to remove the restrictions.

Police said on Thursday that the situation in the valley is peaceful and no unwanted incident has been reported. A police spokesman said some people who witnessed personal interests tried to spread baseless rumours of "Police forcibly handing over Geelani" to Geelani. He said, "The police have completely denied such baseless reports as false propaganda of inciting violence. Rather, the police helped bring Geelani's mortal remains from his house to the cemetery, as anti-social elements feared taking undue advantage of the situation. Geelani's relatives attended the funeral.''
