In the newly-formed 90-member Haryana Assembly, 96% of the elected MLAs are crorepatis, while 13% face criminal cases, as per a report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR). The analysis, based on the affidavits of the 90 winning candidates, reveals a slight increase in the number of crorepati MLAs compared to the previous assembly—up from 93% in 2019 to 96% this year.

Among the MLAs, 44% have assets exceeding Rs 10 crore, while only 2.2% hold assets below Rs 20 lakh. The average asset value per MLA stands at Rs 24.97 crore, a significant rise from Rs 18.29 crore in 2019.

Party-wise, 96% of BJP legislators, 95% of Congress MLAs, and all winners from the INLD and Independents have declared assets over Rs 1 crore. Independent MLA from Hisar, Savitri Jindal, leads the list with assets worth over Rs 270 crore, followed by BJP’s Shakti Rani Sharma with Rs 145 crore and Shruti Choudhry with Rs 134 crore.

A total of 30 MLAs have been re-elected this year, and their average assets have increased by 59%, from Rs 9.08 crore in 2019 to Rs 14.46 crore in 2024.

Regarding criminal records, 12 of the winning candidates have disclosed criminal cases, with six facing serious charges, including one accused of attempted murder. In 2019, seven candidates had serious criminal charges against them.

When broken down by party, 19% of Congress MLAs, 6% of BJP legislators, and 67% of Independent winners have declared criminal cases.

Additionally, 28 winning candidates have reported liabilities of Rs 1 crore or more. Congress' Rajbir Fartia from Loharu tops this list with liabilities amounting to Rs 44 crore. Fartia is also the highest income earner, declaring an income of Rs 10.75 crore in his 2023-24 Income Tax Return.

In terms of education, 68% of the elected candidates hold graduate degrees or higher, while 29% have education levels ranging from Class 8 to Class 12.

The new Assembly also sees an increase in female representation, with 14% of the MLAs being women, up from 10% in 2019. Furthermore, 66% of the MLAs are between the ages of 51 and 80.

In the recently concluded election, the BJP secured its third consecutive victory, managing to win 48 seats, 11 more than Congress. Meanwhile, the JJP and AAP struggled to gain traction, and the INLD secured only two seats.
