Right time to introduce solids for your baby!!!

The best time to introduce solid foods is when your baby has developed the skills needed to eat. But parents wonder, when is the “right” time to introduce solids? Ideally solids should be introduced after the sixth month.

The Department of Health and Children recommend that weaning starts at 6 months for those babies who have been exclusively breast fed, or sometime between 4-6 months if your baby has been formula fed. It is not recommended to start solids before 4 months or to delay past 26 weeks. Before 4 months a baby's gut is not fully mature and easily digested breast milk or formula is all that is needed.

Why the fourth or sixth month in particular? It is around this time that babies typically stop using their tongues to push food out of their mouths and begin to develop the coordination to move solid food from the front of the mouth to the back for swallowing. One baby might seem to be ready for solids at 4 months, while another shows no signs of readiness until around 6 or 7 months.  Just because your friend’s baby may have begun eating solid foods at 3 or 4 months of age does not mean that your baby should.

Remember that “real food” is breast milk or formula and these contain all the important nutrients that an infant needs to develop properly.
