He released a statement claiming that the honorary title conferred on him by fans and the film business was not his. He has asked that the media and supporters refrain from calling him "Thala" or using any other superlative prefixes. Fans were unhappy, yet they applauded him for doing such a thing as Kollywood's biggest star.

RRR director SS Rajamouli, who is now promoting his picture, reacted to this by saying he was "very impressed" with Ajith for making such a decision. "Says the director," "I really like what he did recently, which was to beg supporters to stop calling him #Thala. Despite the fact that millions of admirers name him Thala, he insists that simply addressing him as Ajith / AK / Ajithkumar suffices."

Dheena, Ajith's 2001 film, earned him the moniker Thala.
