New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha was on Monday, August 1, adjourned for an hour till noon as Shiv Sena members among other Oppositions made a ruckus over the detain of its leader Sanjay Raut by the Enforcement Directorate and price rise.
Soon after the House assembled for the day at 11 am, M Venkaiah Naidu, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, announced the House's adjournment.
Shiv Sena leaders descended on the House well to chant anti-government slogans after Sanjay Raut, a Rajya Sabha member and the party's leader, was reportedly unfairly targeted by the government's central investigative agencies.
After being questioned for a full day about alleged irregularities in the Patra Chawl redevelopment project in Mumbai's Goregaon, Raut was arrested by the ED on Sunday.
Priyanka Chaturvedi and Anil Desai, both members of the Shiv Sena, displayed signs that read, "ED stands for the extended department of BJP." The government was being denounced by MPs from other opposition parties for price increases and other issues.
M. Venkaiah Naidu, the chairman of the Rajya Sabha, attempted to govern the House amidst the clamour and asked the MPs to return to their seats. The Chairman called the House to adjourn till noon while the commotion persisted. Beginning on July 18, the Monsoon Session of Parliament will last till August 12.
Four Congress members were put on administrative leave by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on July 26 for the remainder of the monsoon session due to their disorderly behaviour and disruption of the House's business. The Speaker had repeatedly warned the suspended MPs and other opposition members not to protest with signs denouncing price increases. The four suspended Congress members are TN Prathapan, Manickam Tagore, Ramya Haridas, and Jothimani.
