Bajaj Auto Limited said on Wednesday that it will invest 300 crores (USD 40 million) in a new electric car facility in Akurdi (Pune). According to the brand, this plant will be able to produce 500,000 electric vehicles every year. Bajaj's first Chetak scooter factory is also located in this area (Akurdi, Pune).

In its upcoming electric car production factory in Pune, Bajaj Auto says it will use "leading-edge robotic and automated" manufacturing techniques. Everything will be automated, from logistics and material management to fabrication and painting, assembly, and quality assurance. The complex will cover more than 2 million square feet and employ roughly 800 people.

In addition to the announced investment, the business stated that other suppliers will join in to provide an additional $250 million (USD 33 million). By June 2022, the first vehicle from this unit should be on the road.

"Bajaj 2.0 launched on the roaring Pulsar in 2001, and Bajaj 3.0 will appear on the beautiful Chetak in 2021. Except for the implementation of one state-of-the-art ICE platform that is now in development, all of Bajaj's R&D drive train resources are now laser focused on developing future EV solutions. This collaboration reflects our opinion that light Electric Vehicles for sustainable urban travel are a concept whose time has now arrived. Thus, this investment in Akurdi completes a virtuous cycle of hi-tech R&D competencies, high-efficiency engineering capabilities, world-class supply chain synergies, and a global distribution network that should propel us into a market-leading position in EVs in India and abroad," said Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd.
