Rupee falls 22 paise, crosses 76-mark vs US dollar

Indian Rupee Vs US Dollar: On Friday, the rupee fell 22 paise to settle at 76.16 against the US dollar as investors assessed the global economic implications of the Russia-Ukraine war in the face of rising crude oil prices.

The rupee opened weak against the dollar on the interbank foreign currency market, at 76.06, and fell further during the session as investors shied away from risky assets. During the session, the domestic currency fluctuated between a high of 75.99 and a low of 76.22. The rupee ended the day at 76.16 per dollar, down 22 paise from its previous close.

Meanwhile, the US dollar index declined 0.27 percent to 98.05. The index gauges the strength of the greenback against a basket of six currencies. The global oil benchmark, Brent crude futures, declined 0.80 percent to USD 111.34 a barrel.

This week, as investors assess the global economic impact of the Russia-Ukraine situation, it has remained the most important topic for investors. On Thursday, international crude oil prices surpassed $120 a barrel for the first time in nine years, before easing back to USD 111 on Friday.

The BSE Sensex fell 768.87 points, or 1.40 percent, to 54,333.81, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 252.70 points, or 1.53 percent, to 16,245.35. According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors were net sellers in the capital market on Thursday, offloading shares worth Rs.6,644.65 crore.
