Moscow: The Moscow region was the target of an overnight Ukrainian drone attack, according to the Russian defence ministry.

The ministry stated on Telegram that "the UAV was destroyed by means of air defence," adding that there were no injuries or property damage.
Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of Moscow, had earlier announced the attack without mentioning its location.

He posted on Telegram that "an enemy drone attack attempt was made." A drone attack in central Moscow was allegedly carried out by Ukraine days prior to the attempted strike.

A drone crashed on Monday near the defence ministry in the middle of the Russian capital, and another struck an office block in a neighbourhood to the south. Prior to several drone attacks this year, Moscow and its surroundings, which are located about 500 kilometres (310 miles) from the Ukrainian border, were rarely targeted.

Two drones were shot down over the Kremlin at the beginning of May. Later that month, drone attacks targeted Moscow high-rises. Russia claimed earlier this month to have shot down five Ukrainian drones responsible for interfering with operations at Moscow's Vnukovo airport.

The drone strikes against Moscow come a few weeks into a Ukrainian counteroffensive to reclaim territory Moscow has taken since extensive hostilities broke out in February 2022.
