Moscow: Russia and microblogging site Twitter have been at loggerheads for a long time. Meanwhile, a Russian court imposed a fine of 19 million rubles (about $259,000) on Twitter on Thursday (May 27, 2021). In Indian currency, the amount is about Rs. 1.87 crore. The action has been taken on Twitter for not removing banned content.

Twitter is alleged to have played a key role in increasing protests in Russia. Russian state communications watchdog Roscomnadzor (Ruskomnadzor) alleged in March that Twitter had failed to remove content that incited children to commit suicide. At the same time, it could not remove child pornography and drug information. The agency had announced on March 10 that it was limiting the speed of uploading photos and videos on the platform. However, less than a week after the announcement, Twitter was threatened to block the Internet Media platform within a month if it did not comply with the Russian government's demands.

Similarly, Ruskomnadzor had earlier this month partially softened twitter as it removed more than 90 percent of banned content. The agency says it includes child pornography, narcotics and suicide-related content. In view of this, the decision has been taken.
