SEOUL: On Tuesday, South Korean President-elect Yoon Suk-yeol was scheduled to pay a visit to former President Park Geun-hye in her hometown of Daegu, sparking speculation over whether they will be able to repair their strained relationship.
As per the report, Yoon led an investigation team into Park's corruption scandal in 2016, which resulted in her impeachment, removal from office, and jail. During the election campaign, the South Korean President-elect stated that despite doing his job as a prosecutor, he feels remorse for the former President.
After serving four years and nine months of a 22-year sentence for corruption, Park was pardoned in December 2021. In March 2022, she returned to a new home in her village after months of treatment in a Seoul hospital. Yoon has made it clear that he wants to pay a visit to the former President. Yoon is also anticipated to invite her to his inauguration ceremony on May 10 during Tuesday's meeting.
Daegu was the final destination on Yoon's two-day tour of North Gyeongsang province's important cities, which was organised to express gratitude for the region's support during the March presidential election. The President-elect of South Korea was set to return to Seoul later Tuesday.
