During the lockdown implemented due to Coronavirus (COVID-19) across the country, black marketing of salt in many districts including Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh is not taking its name. Recently, people have broken down to buy salt due to rumours of a shortage of salt in the state. The situation is such that those people who needed one to two packets in a month, they are carrying salt after filling the sack. Buying salt at three to four times the price.

According to media reports, after the rumour, the Collector has formed an investigation team of three departments, but even after this, the administration has failed to curb it effectively. The team has been limited to guerrilla operations and the black marketing is still on. After the rumour flew, on Tuesday the crowd of people from the surrounding rural areas gathered in the grocery stores of Takhatpur. People filled sacks and started buying salt for three to four times the price. Retailers charged the price of one packet from 45 to 50 rupees from the people. The surprising thing is that people kept paying the price and expressed satisfaction that the right price was found.

From stockists to retailers are engaged in lightening the pockets of the people and the departmental team is not able to reach them. Even after four to five days, the black marketing of salt has not been controlled. Bilaspur Collector Dr SK Alang gave directions, then a joint team of officers of Food, Measurement and Food and Drugs Department was formed, but the team kept roaming in urban and rural areas, black marketing has not been curbed yet. On Thursday, the joint team investigated 20 grocery stores and fined seven grocery shoppers with a fine of 35 thousand rupees on the charge of black marketing.
