SAN FRANCISCO: Mayor London Breed and Police Chief William Scott of San Francisco announced a USD 6 million award for a gun violence prevention programme.
According to the Xinhua news agency, the money will be used to continue sponsoring the San Francisco Violence Reduction Initiative (VRI), which received a USD 1.5 million grant when it was founded in 2020.
"This award will allow us to continue assisting residents who are most at risk of committing violent crimes by meeting them where they are and preventing violence before it occurs. I want to express my gratitude to our state and local partners, as well as the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), for their continuous efforts to bridge the gap between the community and law enforcement while keeping San Francisco citizens safe" Mayor Breed said.
"While we have made considerable progress in changing our criminal justice system here in San Francisco," Mayor Breed added, "there is still work to be done." "With this grant, we will be able to continue to assist residents who are most at risk of committing violent crimes by meeting them where they are and preventing crime from occurring in the first place."
