India's star tennis player Sania Mirza has started the year in a great way. He has won the first round of the Adelaide International tournament with a bang. Sania teamed up with Ukraine's Nadia Kichenok to beat second-seeded Gabriela Dubrovski and Giuliana Olmos in the women's doubles pre-quarterfinals. On the other hand, in the men's pairing of Ramkumar Ramanathan and Rohan Bopanna, they started with a win.
The pair of Sani and Nadia had lost 1-6 in the first set of the match. After which both made a great comeback. Sania-Nadia won the second set 6-3. In the third set, Olmos of Mexico and Dubrowski of Canada gave a tough fight. However, the pair of Sania and Nadia managed to clinch the third set 10-8 after a tough fight. Some time ago i.e. in August last year, during the 56th meeting of the Mission Olympic Cell, Indian tennis star Sania Mirza was selected in the TOPS.
Sania was included in the government's Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) after four years of opting out of the programme. It is worth noting here that the 34-year-old multiple Grand Slam winner opted out of the scheme when he was last picked in 2017 due to a fractured injury that led to a layoff. A Sports Authority of India official said, “Yes, Sania has been selected in the TOPS list recently. Sania had already qualified for the Tokyo Olympics on the basis of her protected ranking before taking a break from the sport due to pregnancy.
