Manila: Sara Duterte-Carpio, the daughter of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, filed for Vice President in the May 2022 elections on Saturday. According to sources, Carpio, 43, sent a representative to the Commission on Elections to file her candidacy as a substitute vice presidential candidate on behalf of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), a political party she joined earlier this week. Former Senator Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the son of former President Ferdinand Marcos, will be Carpio's running mate in the presidential election.
Marcos' party, the Partido Federal Ng Pilipinas, accepted and backed Carpio as its vice presidential candidate in next year's elections in a resolution passed on Saturday. Carpio and Marcos were sponsors at the wedding of a political ally's daughter this week. Candidates for the 2022 elections can be substituted until November 15, according to the polling body. If a candidate dies, withdraws, or is disqualified by the polling authority, the regulations provide for substitution.
According to multiple polling studies, Carpio, the mayor of Duterte's hometown of Davao City, is the top choice for President in the 2022 elections. According to a national poll conducted by Pulse Asia from September 6 to 11, 20% of 2,400 adult Filipinos aged 18 and up endorse Carpio as a "likely" presidential contender.
