NEW DELHI: On the occasion of World Environment Day on June 5, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will speak at an event on the 'Save Soil Movement' in New Delhi, according to his office.

The 'Save Soil Movement,' is a global movement to raise awareness about declining soil health and encourage a conscious reaction to enhance it, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev began the 'Save Soil Movement initiative' in March by embarking on a 100-day motorbike tour that took him through 27 nations, according to the statement, with the 75th day of the adventure occurring on June 5.

Prime Minister Narendra  Modi's participation in the programme will demonstrate shared concerns and a commitment to improving India's soil health, the statement said.

World Environment Day, the annual event, led by the U.N. Environment Programme (UNEP), was first observed on June 5, 1973.  Since 1987, the event, is held in various countries on a rotational basis. This year, World Environment Day will take place in Sweden and marks the fifteen anniversary of the UN conference in 1972, referred to as Stockholm+50.
