Hyderabad: Rash driving by a school van driver killed an 18-month-old baby in Vanasthalipuram on the city’s outskirts on Thursday. The van that was picking up children for school in the local region hit the child while the driver reversed the vehicle into the narrow lane where the boy lived. The driver, Shankar (26), fled the spot even as the child, G Rohan Reddy, lay motionless on the road after being mowed down. This is the second such incident in the city in the past two weeks. Recently, B Varun, 7, was run over by his school van at Moinabad after he landed from the vehicle.

Mr. Satyanarayana Reddy, a relative, said, “The driver fled from the spot however was caught later. Rohan’s mother Mounika, who is pregnant, collapsed.” Vanasthalipuram inspector A. Venkataiah said that Shankar had been arrested. Rohan Reddy’s parents donated his eyes to the L.V. Prasad Eye Hospital on Thursday.
