Schools across Manipur will remain closed on September 9 and 10 due to escalating violence in the state. The decision follows a recent missile attack that resulted in one fatality and three injuries.

The Directorate of Education has announced the closure of all government, private, and central schools in the state. The official notification stated, "In continuation of this office order of even number dated September 6, 2024, all schools in the state, including Government, Government Aided, Private, and Central Schools, will be closed on September 9 and 10, 2024."

The closure is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students and staff amidst the ongoing unrest. The state government had previously announced school closures on September 7 for the same reason.

The violence in Manipur, which began in May last year, has led to the deaths of over 200 people and displaced thousands due to ethnic clashes between the Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo groups from the adjoining hills.

The situation worsened recently with a missile attack on September 6 targeting the residence of late former Chief Minister M. Koireng in Moirang. The attack resulted in the death of Rk. Rabei, a 70-year-old resident who was at the site for a ceremony. The incident has heightened tensions in the state.

On September 8, protesters held a rally against the recent violence, including drone and gun attacks, near the Raj Bhavan and Chief Minister’s bungalow in Imphal. Security forces used tear gas to disperse the large crowd, which had marched over 3 km towards a high-security zone.
