New Delhi: An earthquake measuring 6.6 on the Richter scale hit Nepal in the early hours of Wednesday (November 9). The tremors were so intense that it also shook parts of north India, including Delhi, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Lucknow. Six people lost their lives after a house collapsed in Nepal's Doti district. An earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter scale hit Nepal at 1.57 a.m., the National Centre for Seismology said.  

The tremors were felt 90 km southeast of Pithoragarh in Uttarakhand, bordering Nepal. Earlier on Tuesday evening, two earthquakes of magnitude 4.9 and 3.5 magnitudes hit the region. Nepal is situated in the lap of the Himalayas. Earthquakes keep coming here every day. The devastating April 2015 earthquake shook Nepal. Government figures show that 8,964 people died and 21,952 people were injured in that earthquake. Scientists say that there is a complete possibility of such a devastating earthquake in the Himalayan region.  

In fact, even after the strong possibility of a major earthquake in the Himalayan region, it cannot be predicted and in view of this, scientists have emphasized on strong preparations to face it instead of fearing it. Speaking to the media, Dr Ajay Paul, a senior geophysicist at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology here, said that the Himalayas have come into existence due to the collision of the Indian plate and the Eurasian plate and due to the continuous pressure on the Indian plate of the Eurasian plate, the deformation energy collecting under it keeps coming out in the form of earthquakes from time to time.
