Within a week, the Yogi Adityanath government has sent a second team of health specialists to Firozabad to identify the dengue variant causing the epidemic, which looks to be particularly harmful to children. The cases are being investigated by a three-member team from Lucknow's King George Medical University (KGMU), lead by prominent pediatrician Dr. S.N. Singh.

Local doctors will be guided by the team on how to control the disease's spread and build treatment protocols. The state health department's additional director, A.K. Singh, said, "There are four serotypes of dengue viruses, designated as DENV-1, 2, 3 and 4. All are transmitted human-to-human through the bite of some species of Aedes mosquitoes.

"The DENV-3 infections cause dengue hemorrhagic fever which is a severe and fatal form of the disease. It causes a sudden drop in platelet count and bleeding in the gums. Dengue shock syndrome is the most severe form of dengue hemorrhagic fever."

The district of Firozabad has been the most impacted, with the number of dengue infections growing at an alarming level. The National Center for Illness Control (NCDC) previously verified that the viral disease cases were mostly dengue fever, with a few cases of malaria, scrub typhus, and leptospirosis is thrown in for good measure.

The World Health Organization has warned the district government that the epidemic may be caused by dengue hemorrhagic fever. Firozabad CMO Dinesh Kumar Premi said, "There are 64 camps in the district where 4,500 people, including those with fever, are undergoing treatment." Health department officials have confirmed 220 cases of dengue in the district so far. Diarrhea is emerging as a major symptom, with about 40 percent of the patients reporting it at government facilities.
