Srinagar: Security forces successfully thwarted an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control (LOC) in the Gurez sector of Bandipora district today. The confrontation between infiltrating terrorists and the Indian Army erupted after movement was detected near the LOC fence.
Upon learning of the skirmish, additional forces were swiftly deployed to the area to support the ongoing operation. This encounter follows a series of recent clashes; earlier this week, security forces neutralized three terrorists in two separate encounters along the LOC in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district. The escalation in security measures comes ahead of the Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled to occur in three phases: September 18, September 25, and October 1. To prevent any disruption by terrorists, heightened security alerts have been implemented across the region.
In preparation for the elections, approximately 300 companies of paramilitary forces have been stationed throughout Jammu and Kashmir. The highest deployment is in Srinagar, with 55 companies assigned, followed by 50 in Anantnag. Other districts have varying levels of security, including Kulgam with 31 companies, Budgam, Pulwama, and Awantipora each with 24, Shopian with 22, Kupwara with 20, Baramulla with 17, Handwara with 15, Bandipora with 13, and Ganderbal with 3 companies.
This latest encounter in Bandipora occurs just 17 days after a deadly gunfight on August 14 in Doda district, which resulted in the death of an Army officer and the elimination of a terrorist. The intensified security efforts reflect the ongoing commitment to safeguarding the electoral process and maintaining order in the region.
