Sharzil Imam was granted bail by the Allahabad High Court on Saturday in a case involving alleged provocative remarks against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Aligarh Muslim University in 2019. It has been learned that he has been granted bail by Justice Soumitra Dayal Singh of the Allahabad High Court. A specific order on Sharzil Imam's bail, however, has yet to be released.

Last year, Sharzil Imam, a JNU alumni who was one of the primary organisers of the Shaheen Bagh protest, was apprehended by police in Jehanabad, Bihar. In his remarks, Sharzil Imam allegedly mentioned splitting from India and the demonstrators. Though Sharzil Imam had already identified a bell in instances in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, police from Manipur, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh had also filed a FIR against the JNU student.

Moreover, the Shrazil Imam was accused of giving aggressive statements. Violence erupted outside Jamia Millia Islamia University in December 2019, according to reports. In April, Delhi Police charged Sharzil Imam with sedition, alleging that his speech incited disturbances in the Jamia Millia Islamia University region.

While Sharzil Imam is now incarcerated in Delhi's Tihar prison, he has also been charged in the Delhi riot plot case and the Jamia protest violence case. Sharzil Imam told a Delhi court last month that he is not a terrorist and that the continuing prosecution against him is based on the dictates of an emperor rather than a government founded by law.
