Sensex continues to fall, Nifty settles below 17,100

The Indian market indices fell for the sixth straight session on Wednesday, owing to selling pressure in financial and automobile stocks. Both indexes started higher but lost all of their gains in the last hour.

The benchmark BSE Sensex dropped 69 points, or 0.12 percent, to 57,232, while the wider NSE Nifty fell 29 points, or 0.17 percent, to 17,063.

Mid- and small-cap stocks, on the other hand, concluded on a high note, with the Nifty Midcap 100 index up 0.64 percent and small-cap stocks rising 1.16 percent.

Five  Sectoral indices of the  NSE  finished in the red. Nifty Financial Services and Nifty Auto fell 0.24 percent and 0.21 percent, respectively, underperforming the index.

The top Nifty loss was ONGC, which fell 2.39 percent to RS 161. Among the laggards were Hero MotoCorp, NTPC, L&T, and JSW Steel. Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, IndusInd Bank, Tata Consumer Products, and Maruti Suzuki India, on the other hand, benefited.

NTPC, L&T, Bajaj Finserv, Nestle India, ICICI Bank, and the HDFC twins (HDFC and HDFC Bank) suffered the greatest losses on the Sensex, with their stocks falling as high as 1.40 percent.
