Sensex falls 361 points; Nifty hit below 17,550

Keeping down its losses for the fourth consecutive session, equity benchmark Sensex plummeted 361 points on weakened Friday, weighed by HDFC Housing, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Tata Consultancy Services amid a weak trend in global markets.

St close, The BSE index ended 360.78 points or 0.61 percent lower at 58,765.58. Similarly, the NSE Nifty declined 86.10 points or 0.49  percent to 17,532.05.

Bajaj Finserv was the top loser in the Sensex pack, falling over 3 percent , followed by Maruti Suzuki, Bharti Airtel, Asian Paints, Bajaj Finance and HDFC. Conversely, Mahindra and Mahindra Dr Reddy’s, UltraTech Cement and Power Grid were among the gainers.

8 of 15 sector gauges compiled by the NSE ended lower led by the Nifty Realty index's nearly 2 per cent fall. Nifty Bank,  Nifty Financial Services, Nifty IT and Private Bank indices also fell in range of 0.5 to 1 per cent. On the other hand, Pharma, Healthcare, Consumer Durables and PSU Banking shares witnessed buying interest.

Elsewhere in Asia, stock exchanges in Tokyo and Seoul ended in the red. Shanghai and Hong Kong markets were closed for a holiday. Equities in Europe were also trading with significant losses in mid-session deals. Meanwhile, international oil benchmark Brent crude fell 0.47 percent to  USD 77.94 per barrel.
