Sensex, Nifty Gain For Fourth consecutive day, Metal, Pharma stock sparkle

The Indian equity benchmark indices closed Monday's trading session on higher note, boosted by gains in pharmaceuticals, and metal stocks.

The  BSE Sensex closed up 296 points at 49,502.41, while the NSE Nifty rose 119.20 points to 14,942.40. The overall market breadth was positive as 2,056 shares ended higher while 1,052 ended lower on the BSE.

Coal India, UPL, Hindalco Industries, IOC, and Tata Motors were among top gainers on the Nifty while  Shree Cements, UltraTech Cement, Britannia Industries, Infosys, and Hero MotoCorp were among the losers.

The Nifty Pharma and Metal indices rose 3 percent each on the NSE In other indices, Nifty Metal index increased 3.14 percent on the day.

Metal shares gained as iron ore futures surged and copper prices hit a record high amid an outlook for tight supply and strong demand fuelled by a global economic recovery.

The Indian rupee recovered early losses to end the day at 73.34 per dollar, a new high, amid buying in the domestic stock market for the fourth consecutive session.
