Seoul: The government announced on Monday that 19 foreign Korean War veterans have been invited to the upcoming annual ceremony commemorating the sacrifices of UN troops in the 1950-53 Korean War. According to reports, veterans and their families from seven countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and Canada, are expected to arrive here on Monday for a six-day visit.

On Thursday, the veterans are expected to attend the "Turn Toward Busan" event at the UN Memorial Cemetery. Following the suggestion of Vincent Courtenay, a Canadian Korean War veteran, the event was held for the first time in 2007. This year's event will also be attended by him.

The UN Memorial Cemetery, the world's only UN cemetery, is located in the southeastern port city of Busan. Since 1975, South Korea has invited approximately 33,000 Korean War veterans and their families as part of efforts to honour their sacrifices during the Korean War. The war involved 1.95 million UN troops from 22 countries, and it ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty. During their stay here, the veterans also intend to visit the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) that separates the two Koreas, according to the Ministry.
