Seven-time champion US veteran Serena Williams crashed out in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday. Serena is defeated by Chiam's 28-year-old Wang Qiang. Williams, who won 23 Grand Slam titles, was defeated by Kiang 6-4, 7-6 (2-7), 7-5 in the third round match. World number 29 player Kiang won the match in 2 hours 40 minutes and took his place in the next round.

Kiang won the first set but lost in the second set to a tiebreaker. In the third and decisive set, they have won 7-5. Williams wanted to match Margaret Court's overall Grand Slam title (24), but now she will have to wait a bit. Serena last won the Grand Slam title in 2017 in Melbourne. Former world number one Carolyn Wozniacki retired from tennis in the third round of the Australian Open as well. Wozniacki had said in December that this would be his last tournament.
