New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge expressed deep concern about the gravity of the situation in Manipur, a state currently grappling with violence. He emphasized that President Draupadi Murmu, being from a tribal community, would be able to comprehend the severity of the matter.

Senior leaders of the INDIA alliance, accompanied by 21 MPs who recently visited Manipur, have a scheduled meeting with President Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan today. During this meeting, they intend to present a memorandum detailing the current state of affairs in the northeastern region.

"We will meet Madam President (Draupadi Murmu) at 11.30 am today and apprise her of the situation in Manipur, along with sharing our experiences from the visit," said Kharge.

The Congress chief further added that the floor leaders and the 21-member delegation of Opposition MPs, who embarked on a two-day visit to Manipur, will submit the memorandum to President Murmu.

The backdrop of this meeting is the Opposition's persistent demand for a comprehensive discussion on the situation in Manipur. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent statement in Parliament regarding the matter adds to the urgency of the situation.

Prior to the commencement of the Monsoon Session, PM Modi had strongly condemned a disturbing video that had gone viral on social media. The video depicted the horrifying ordeal of two women who were stripped and paraded naked. PM Modi assured that all those responsible for the reprehensible act would be identified and brought to justice.

The Opposition has consistently stressed the need for a detailed discussion under Rule 267 to address the turmoil in the strife-torn state.
