NEW DELHI: The Delhi Commission for Women has urgently called for the imposition of President's rule in Manipur and the setting up of a Supreme Court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the recent clashes in the state. This recommendation, part of their interim report, has been sent to President Droupadi Murmu.
Swati Maliwal, the chief of DCW, visited Manipur last week to interact with survivors of the ethnic violence that has plagued the state since May. The report stresses the need for invoking Article 356 of the Indian Constitution to impose President's rule in the state, given the severity of violence and the escalating polarization between the two communities. It emphasizes that the state's administration must be overseen by impartial individuals whom both communities can trust.
As part of the interim recommendations, the DCW proposes that Chief Minister N Biren Singh step down from office. Furthermore, they advocate for the formation of a Supreme Court Monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate the ethnic clashes and the government's response.
The report also calls for an urgent visit to the state by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union ministers. Since May 3, the state has witnessed a tragic toll of at least 150 fatalities and several hundred injuries due to ethnic violence triggered by a 'Tribal Solidarity March' in the hill districts. The march was organized to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
