TOKYO: A powerful earthquake struck northeastern Japan late Wednesday night, killing two people and injuring 92 others, police and fire officials said on Thursday.

According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, a total of 92 persons were reported injured as early Thursday morning in seven prefectures, including Miyagi and Fukushima, where the quake was registered at magnitude 7.4. Strong shaking was reported throughout the country's northeastern and eastern regions, particularly in Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures, where the quake registered as a six on the Japanese seismic intensity scale, with seven being the highest.

The earthquake struck around 11:36 p.m. local time on Wednesday, with a north latitude of 37.7 degrees, an east longitude of 141.7 degrees, and a depth of 60 kilometres. Residents in the Miyagi and Fukushima Prefectures have been advised to keep away from the coast due to a tsunami warning of up to 1 metre.

After a bullet train was derailed by the earthquake on Thursday morning, a portion of the Tohoku Shinkansen bullet train service was suspended. The Tohoku Expressway in Osaki, Miyagi Prefecture, and the Joban Expressway in Soma, Fukushima, were both temporarily closed by the East Nippon Expressway Company.
