China helping Russia in facing sanctions over invasion of Ukraine

China is willing to assist Russia in dealing with Western sanctions imposed as a result of the invasion of Ukraine, but only to the extent that it does not face sanctions and its internal food security is not compromised.

In response to the developing Russia-Ukraine crisis, President Xi Jinping issued an uncommon warning, urging his country to produce more food in order to lessen reliance on foreign markets. "The Chinese people's rice bowls must be filled with Chinese grain."

China is concerned about food shortages after experiencing a number of famines that killed millions in the past. It aims to generate 95 percent of the grain it eats. It has become more fearful as a result of the current conflict. The government is currently conducting an initiative to ensure that the maximum amount of arable land is accessible for growing foodgrains right soon.

But the war has now put China in a bind. Last year, China imported one-third of its annual grain requirement from Ukraine rather than the US. The next crop will be grown in Ukraine in April, and China has no idea if it will be able to import maize again this year.
